The 2021 Terrain continues GMC's growth in the compact SUV segment with outstanding versatility, efficient and leading power, a wide range of models and packaged, and many other features. Here, we make a few observations while comparing it to the 2021 Mazda CX-5.
The 2021 GMC Terrain is all-turbo
The GMC Terrain has some advanced powertrain equipment. Each model includes a nine-speed automatic transmission, offering smooth shifting and better operational efficiency. The CX-5 only offers a six-speed automatic, and it has its limitations.
Each Terrain includes a turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder that outputs 170 horsepower and an impressive 203 lb-ft of torque. This provides a fantastic blend of power and efficiency. It has significantly more torque and has better efficiency than the CX-5's 2.5L four-cylinder that is standard in most models.
The CX-5 offers a turbocharged engine that is more powerful but much less efficient, and it is only standard in the premium model that has a starting MSRP of nearly $43,000.
Front-wheel drive Terrain models achieve an impressive fuel consumption rating of 9.2 L/100 km in the city and 7.8 L/100 km on the highway. The CX-5's 2.5L with FWD increases city mileage to 9.7 L/100 km. When both engines are paired with AWD, the Terrain also edges out the CX-5's city rating with a rating of 9.6 L/100 km. With the added torque, the Terrain is a superior performer around town.
The 2021 GMC Terrain offers special convenience
The Terrain is designed for versatility. Standard flat-fold seating turns the Terrain into a great platform to transport a variety of cargo alongside your family. Larger, flat items receive more contact points that enhance stability. Behind the front seats, the Terrain also has more cargo volume than the CX-5. This combines with generous seating dimensions to transform into several family-friendly configurations.
Also inside, use your voice to have Amazon Alexa to play music, check the news, make calls, organize your day, and more. GMC’s infotainment is much more intuitive than the complicated, cluttered CX-5 system which needs to be operated by a poorly designed dial.
