In the competitive world of compact SUVs, the 2024 GMC Terrain and the 2024 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross stand out as prominent contenders. However, a closer examination reveals that the Terrain offers some distinct advantages that set it apart. This article delves into the specifics, comparing the two models in terms of engine performance, fuel efficiency, interior and cargo space. A More Powerful...

The compact Terrain makes a refreshing splash in 2021. With an advanced turbocharged powertrain, admired efficiency, standard GMC Pro Safety system, built-in Amazon Alexa, and available HD Surround Vision, there is so much to be excited about. It also features flat-folding seats and standard all-wheel drive, making it a great companion for many Canadian adventures.
These amenities and more are pushing the Terrain ahead of the competition in its segment. Here, we compare it to the 2022 Hyundai Tucson.
The 2021 GMC Terrain has better efficiency and a powerful engine
The Terrain features an advanced, 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that outputs an impressive 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. It provides this compact SUV with a dynamic ride and plenty of power to distribute to the all-wheel drive system (front-wheel drive available).
Most Tucson grades have a standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder that produces 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. However, the Terrain's torque is more responsive. The top Tucson grades feature a hybrid, but you will pay much more with a starting MSRP of nearly $40,000 (and up).
One of the more exciting qualities of the GMC Terrain is fuel efficiency. All-wheel drive Terrain models have 25 lb-ft of additional torque, but essentially have the same combined fuel efficiency rating as their all-gas Tucson counterparts. You receive better power distribution right from the start.
Most Tucson grades include an 8-speed automatic transmission (6-speed on hybrids). However, each Terrain grade features a standard 9-speed automatic transmission that offers an edge on performance. All-wheel drive is a standard feature in all Terrain models. The Tucson's Preferred and Essential trims require an upgrade to AWD.
The 2021 GMC Terrain is more comfortable and more capable
Step inside the 2021 GMC Terrain and you will feel the difference with a perfect combination of rugged and refined textures that you will only find in a GMC. The upscale Denali variant also lives up to its name with its own suspension system that provides plush, yet sporty driving dynamics depending on road conditions.
