Three years after being introduced in its current form, the GMC Sierra is getting an upgrade for the next year. Its cousin, the Chevrolet Silverado, also got one, but at GMC, the transformation is even more dramatic. Let's go through the highlights of what promises to be the most interesting Sierra lineup to date.
New versions
Two new versions are coming out, the Denali Ultimate and the AT4X. The first one pushes the luxury envelope like never before at GMC. The model will offer a singular interior design, open-pore woodwork, an ultrasuede roof, high quality materials, in short, the ultimate.
There will even be seats with massage in the front. The model is equipped with 22-inch wheels.
As for the AT4X variant, it's the answer to Chevrolet, which just introduced the ZR2 package with its Silverado. Here, the emphasis is also on luxury inside, but also on off-road capabilities with a suspension that offers more travel, as well as Multimatic shocks that work real miracles in off-road driving. A terrain management system is also included, as are differentials that can be locked with e-locking technology.
Super Cruise
Standard on the Denali Ultimate variant, Cadillac's Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system makes its debut with the Sierra. Two features are noteworthy; the ability to operate when a trailer is attached, as well as the ability to automatically make passes. The two cannot be combined, however.
Mechanical improvements
Under the hood, the engine lineup doesn't change, but two blocks get upgrades. First, the 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder sees its torque jump by 20 percent to 420 lb-ft (it was 348).
As for the diesel engine (3.0-liter Duramax turbo 6-cylinder), changes to the chassis make it possible to add the Max towing package. This increases the capacity to 13,200 pounds, a gain of 4,000 pounds.
More massive screens
Throughout the lineup, we'll find more massive screens for the multimedia system (13.4 inches), the instrument panel (12.3 inches) and the head-up display (15 inches). In the case of the multimedia system, we should note the association with Google, which allows the user to find on the screen the functionalities he uses with his smartphone, among others.
We could go on and on about the improvements made to the Sierra. Simply from an aesthetic point of view, the model has been retouched to make it even more attractive.
We'll have a chance to come back to this model before it hits dealerships, which will happen in the first quarter of 2022.
