2022 GMC Sierra vs. 2022 Toyota Tundra: an improved, but not threatening competitor

The Toyota Tundra is getting a facelift this year, and let's face it, the company has done a remarkable job of bringing its pickup truck up to speed. However, despite this update, class leaders like the GMC Sierra have nothing to fear from the new Japanese brand.

To understand why, let's take a look at some of the features offered by GMC that are still missing from the Japanese model.

The number of versions

Toyota may have improved its Tundra's equipment, but there aren't as many variants as at GMC, and even less variety within the family. With versions designed for work only, or for high luxury (Denali Ultimate), or even better, for real off-road adventures (AT4, AT4X), the Sierra is in a class of its own.

Towing capacity

With a pickup truck, towing capacity is paramount. It also shows us how robust the model we're looking for is.

With Toyota, the maximum capacity is 12,000 pounds with a specific configuration, but it is more often around 11,000. With a GMC Sierra, the capacity is 13,000 pounds. And that's without taking into account an imponderable, but so important, element: the robustness of the chassis. Toyota's progress is there, but the experience and excellent track record are on GMC's side.

The tools

A modern pickup truck has to provide tools for the workers. With the GMC Sierra, there are a ton of them, from the multi-functional tailgate to a carbon fiber composite bed (a first), as well as a 15-angle camera system, including a transparent view of the trailer.

Add to this that in 2022, the Super Cruise autonomous driving system can be selected with certain variants. The latter can now operate even if a trailer is attached to the rear.

Really, the 2022 GMC Sierra is such a complete product that even the arrival of a redesigned competitor isn't even perceived as a threat.
