A Close Look At the 2024 GMC Sierra 3500HD

The 2024 GMC Sierra 3500HD has all the goods you need to be a workhorse for your business, but it has a number of creature comforts and on-board features to make it a truck that can do a whole lot more than pull a trailer (or a stump!) or haul your wares to the jobsite and beyond.

Diesel Workhorse

The 2023 GMC Sierra 3500HD comes with the choice of 6.6-litre gas V8 good for 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque in either 4WD or 2WD configurations, which makes for quiet, efficient progress for getting around town and from site to site. The gas-powered 3500 dual rear-axle truck can also tow over 8,600 kilograms depending on specification. Even in gas-powered form, the 2023 Sierra 3500HD is no shrinking violet when it comes time to tow.

To maximize tow capacity, of course, we turn to the diesel-powered 3500HD. It gets 470 hp and 975 lb-ft from its 6.6L Duramax turbodiesel V8, enough to tow over 16,000 kg depending on spec. That’s 36,000 pounds of weight that can be hauled, which is enough to keep any jobsite well-equipped with heavy machinery. The lowest-capacity diesel model, meanwhile, can still tow just under 10,000 kilos which remains an ultra-capable figure.

All 3500HD models, meanwhile, get a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission.

Trailering Tech

The ability for the Sierra 3500HD to tow is one thing; its ability to make it easier on the driver to do so is another. For that, we turn to features like Transparent Trailer View (TTV), Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert (TSBZA) and new adaptive cruise control tuned for trailering. What TTV does is make use of a number of cameras around the truck and trailer to essentially see “through” the trailer at traffic behind. TSBZA, meanwhile, allows the Sierra 3500HD’s blind spot system to include spots produced by the trailer – multiple trailer lengths can be stored in the GMC Trailering App, then sent to the truck.

In addition to trailering tech, other interior tech features include standard air conditioning and driver seat lumbar adjust, power mirrors, and keyless entry and start. Upgrades include heated front seats, remote engine start, full-grain leather seating, Bose audio and woodgrain trim on Denali models. The GMC MultiPro tailgate can also be specced to help make loading the bed that much easier.

AT4 Off-Road Pro

If you’re looking for an HD truck that can do the heavy lifting both on the road and off, then the AT4 could be the truck for you. In addition to the capability other Sierra 3500HD models have (with over 9,000 kg of tow capacity), AT4 models get Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, special Rancho off-road shocks, off-road skid plates, recovery hooks, and 20” off-road wheels and tires.
