As is the case with so many manufacturers these days, the day of the car is long over at Buick. It has been so ever since the Regal sedan bowed out after the 2020 model year, meaning SUVs and crossovers haven’t just ruled the roost at Buck for a number of years; they’ve monopolized it.
Which, when you consider the quality of Buick’s offerings for 2023, may not be such a bad thing.
2023 Buick Encore GX
We start with the compact entry in the line-up, a handsome, turbocharged runabout that provides a great mix of performance and ‘round town capability. Power comes from one of two engine choices, both turbocharged, both with three cylinders: a 1.2-litre good for 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque and a 1.3 L unit good for 155 hp and 174 lb-ft. The smaller engine is available only with front-wheel-drive, which is also the only way you can get the continuously variable automatic transmission, while AWD models get a nine-speed auto. Trims include Preferred, Select and Essence.
Standard features include six-speaker audio (upgradeable to a seven-speaker Bose system), 10-way power driver’s seat (with optional real leather trim), active noise cancellation, WiFi hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
2023 Buick Envision
For those that need a little more space in their life – well, a little more space in their car, anyway – there’s the Envision compact SUV. The Envision swaps the Encore’s two three-cylinder engines for a single turbocharged four-cylinder, good for 228 hp and 258 lb-ft, fed either to all four wheels or the fronts only through a nine-speed automatic. Trims include Preferred, Essence and Avenir.
Standard features include 18” alloy wheels, tinted windows, LED headlights, 7-speaker audio, and 10.2” infotainment display. It’s also with the Encore that we first have access to the luxurious Avenir trim, that provides Bose nine-speaker audio, 20” wheels, heated outside mirrors with memory settings, panoramic power moonroof, adaptive cruise control, enhanced automatic park assist and perforated real leather seating with heated seats both front and back.
2023 Buick Enclave
For those looking to haul the family with ease, then the three-row Enclave – available in Essence, Premium and Avenir trims -- is the answer. Power for this biggest of Buicks comes courtesy of a 3.6-litre V6 to the tune of 310 hp and 266 lb-ft, fed to all four wheels – AWD being your only choice – via a nine-speed automatic.
Standard features include Premium Ride suspension, 18” alloy wheels, exterior door handles with chrome accents, LED headlamps with automatic high beam control, seven airbags, eight-way power driver’s seat, forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking and heated front seats.
Upgrading to Avenir spec provides a real leather interior, 10-speaker Bose audio, 20” wheels, available auto-adjusting dampers and power moonroof with fixed third-row skylight.
