GMC Hummer EV: Official unveiling expected in the fall

The GMC Hummer EV, an all-electric pickup truck being prepared by GM's truck division (General Motors), was scheduled to make its debut last May. However, due to the coronavirus, the event was postponed. We now know that the model's debut will take place this fall.

The good news is that the pandemic hasn't really delayed the development of the product, so despite a somewhat late presentation, its arrival on the market will occur at about the same time; we'll come back to that.

What to expect?

Let's recall the importance of this model for GM and GMC. First of all, it's the return of a very strong name in the automotive industry: Hummer. While it's true that the latter was stigmatized towards the end of its career because of the appetite it symbolized for black gold, it has remained popular among fans of models capable of taking it. By bringing it back in an electric form, its popularity will remain strong with them, not to mention that it will gain new followers. And for GMC, which only produces trucks, this move to electrification is a major milestone and a sign of things to come for the division.

At the time of the model's announcement in a commercial shown during the Super Bowl last February, it will be remembered that the revealed power was at 1,000 horsepower while the expected torque was at 11,500 lb-ft. Enough to awaken everyone's passions.

Then, a video released in April showed the vehicle driving on an unmarked road and, filmed by a drone, we could see that the roof had been removed, which suggests a host of possibilities with the body configuration. By the way, this roof that allows you to admire the stars already has a name: Infinity Roof.

But it was nothing. A second video, this time shown recently, allowed us to discover other features of the Hummer EV. We learned that it will be equipped with different driving modes (Adrenaline and Crab), the latest generation of the Super Cruise autonomous driving system (introduced at Cadillac), modular panels, an ultra-rapid recharging system and different cameras.

State-of-the-art technology

The Hummer EV will be based on GM's new BEV3 modular platform. The latter features a new battery technology whose name, Ultium, is still being heard. The latter, which makes both smarter and less polluting use of raw materials (notably by reducing the amount of cobalt required), will offer a capacity that will vary between 50 and 200 kWh and will be possible with systems ranging from 400 to 800 volts. The rapid recharging we were referring to will take the form of 80% energy recovery in just 30 minutes.

We also learned from the latest video that production of the model will begin in the fall of 2021 at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck plant, but that you will be able to make reservations from the time of its official launch this fall.

Do we need to tell you that we're looking forward to it? This model is a revolution for the GMC brand, nothing less.
