GMC Sierra 1500 Duramax vs. Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

Picking the right truck with the right engine can be quite an operation. With so many performance details, feature combinations and more, one missed piece of information may cost you more in the long run. Deciding on including a diesel engine is just the start of the shopping adventure.

The GMC Sierra 1500 features the 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel. It’s a class-leading engine with serious performance and more. However, it’s not without competition. The 2020 Ram 1500 features its own diesel counterpart that also generates some interest in the marketplace. We’ve heard the same question — “Which diesel is better?” Let’s shed some light on this subject so you can make an informed decision.

The 2020 GMC Sierra has class-leading horsepower and efficiency

Horsepower is important. The Sierra’s 3.0L Duramax is a turbocharged six-cylinder design that produces a class-leading 277 horsepower along with 460 lb-ft of torque. The Ram 1500 makes available the turbocharged 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 that generates 260 horsepower.

The Sierra edges out the Ram with more horsepower, and it’s more efficient. With an SAE-certified and class-leading fuel consumption rating of 10.2/7.2 L/100 km (city/highway), it beats the Ram’s best diesel rating of 10.5/7.3 L/100 km. The Sierra significantly reduces fuel costs over time.

The 2020 GMC Sierra shifts with a 10-speed transmission

The Sierra couples the Duramax with a 10-speed automatic transmission that’s a first in the industry. With extra gears, the transmission operates more efficiently, especially when towing heavy loads. The smoother shifting also adds to ride comfort. The transmission works in combination with the engine’s exhaust braking capability when in Tow/Haul mode, reducing wear and tear on the brakes.

The Ram couples with an eight-speed automatic transmission. With reduced gears, the powertrain operates more inefficiently and with less refinement. Overall, the Sierra offers a smoother and more efficient transmission.

The Sierra’s ProGrade Trailering System is another industry first available with Duramax-equipped Sierra models. Using the In-Vehicle Trailering App and up to 15 integrated cameras, drivers have a full view of their trailer and cargo. You won’t find a trailering product this effective in the EcoTech-equipped Ram lineup.

The GMC Sierra 1500 is a better diesel option than the Ram 1500 on many aspects.  You can shop for your car online with us. Our representatives are waiting for your call and can answer all your questions about the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 truck.
