What are the Differences Between the Buick Encore and Buick Encore GX?

Buick currently has two subcompact SUVs to offer: the Buick Encore and the Buick Encore GX. Despite similar names and a similar size, these two models are quite different in many ways.

The Buick Encore

The Buick Encore has been on the market for a few years already in its current form but it remains one of the most popular Buick models. This affordable subcompact crossover offers a number of features usually reserved for more expensive vehicles, which makes it a good value in the segment. Standard equipment includes the 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, the six-way power driver’s seat, and the OnStar online services subscription.

Under the hood, the Buick Encore is powered by a turbocharged 1.4L four-cylinder engine that produces 155 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. This output is directed to either the front wheels or all of the wheels via the standard six-speed automatic transmission and the available all-wheel drive.

The Buick Encore GX

The Buick Encore GX is a more modern subcompact SUV that presents many advantages over its competition for a price that is only slightly higher than the one required by the Encore. The Encore GX benefits from its slightly larger exterior dimensions to offer more space to passengers than the Encore in almost all of the measurements. This increase in size is also responsible for a larger cargo compartment that can accommodate bigger items with a maximum load space of 1,422L versus 1,371 in the Encore.

In terms of powertrains, the two models are again very different. Indeed, the Buick Encore GX is powered by a 1.3L turbocharged three-cylinder engine that is capable of producing 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. This power reaches the road with the help of a 9-speed automatic transmission and a standard all-wheel-drive system. This makes the Encore GX more efficient than the Encore during city driving.
